There are a lot of students doing exams, both in Ireland and all over the world, and you hear a lot of people on radio talk shows, television and the internet talking about pressure. Students being under pressure to do well in their exams. And one thing you hear a lot of is, oh there is so much pressure on young people today to succeed and do better than their parents, the belief that each generation must do better than the one before and people should just be happy doing whatever they want as long as they are not blowing up towers or shopping centres and being a nuisance to the rest of us who would prefer not to be turned to cigarette ash at a moment’s notice.
I think that is a good philosophy, money isn’t the be all and end all, and there are no guarantees you will be happy should you acquire both a great job and a great wage. You may still turn out be a bastard, a rich bastard, but a bastard nonetheless. At the same time, there needs to be a happy medium, because if the stone-age kids had been happy to do the same old tired shit their parents did, then we would still be in the fucking stone-age.
